Longworth & District History Society
actively exploring the history of our parishes

Welcome to the Longworth and District History Society!

Researching the living and past history of our area.

We are an established Society founded in 1995 and are interested in all aspects of the history of the English County of Royal Berkshire and of that part of Oxfordshire where our area of interest now rests, after re-organisation of county boundaries in 1972.

We exist to promote and encourage interest and awareness in the combined history of the villages of Longworth, Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor, [aka Draycott Moor] and Hinton Waldrist.

Our society endeavours to stimulate an interest of the rewarding leisure pursuit of local and family history for individuals and groups. These include family and individuals stories, photographs of people and places, newspaper cuttings, certificates of all sorts;  the collection of local wills and transcriptions, school documents and histories, archaeology, buildings, local stories and histories and all the various subjects which are usually referred to as 'local history'.  If you have any knowledge, papers, photographs or other documents that you feel will be of benefit to the society, do please let us know. Email address shown below and on the contact form.

We arrange field trips and lectures, publish a Journal, and support local historical projects.

If you are seeking information on a particular locality or subject, why not use this web site's search box in the menu or the advanced search facility. If it isn't found there, please ask, as it may be waiting for an opportunity to share on this website.

When & where we meet

We meet each month. Indoor meetings are usually at 7.30pm on the third Thursday of each month in Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor Village Hall.

Our Varied Meetings

We have two different kinds of open evenings to which everyone is welcome. There are evenings with an invited speaker, who generally talks on a topic of local interest, usually illustrating the talk with slides. In the Spring and Summer we have many visits to places of interest.

Meetings also include theme evenings hosted by members who have researched a local topic associated with the local villages (Kingston Bagpuize, Southmoor, Longworth and Hinton Waldrist).

Often the material used is from our own growing archive of material - much of which has been gained from about two hundred interviews with local people.

We always welcome new members to the Society - whether Visitors, Individual, Family or Overseas. Membership benefits include free entry to our meetings, and access to our outings and other events.

Or why not just turn up? You will be made very welcome.

£3 visitors, £10 annual membership. Refreshments provided.
